kamishibai VR headset (Final)

Background

Immerse yourself into the era of Japanese Theatre. Kabuki Theater is beautiful but it can be difficult for travelers to approach due to its folk or historical heavy related plays. A Virtual Reality experience setup either at airports, historical areas or outside the Theater can allow audiences to learn about folk stories behind Kabuki plays or experience the Theatre, making their experience at the theatre for meaningful.

Inspiration

For our inspiration, we connected the idea of kamishibai, which means storytelling box. During and after the great depression, storytellers would use kamishibai to tell folk stories on the streets with a special box with flipping pictures. Kamishibai brought wonder and joy with storytelling, much like Kabuki. We felt we could use the idea of kamishibai to tell folk stories and experience of Kabuki.

Persona

Jenna loves traveling with friends plus experiencing authentic cultural experiences. She has traveled to cities like Kyoto and Osaka before and has some basic Japanese language skills she picked up during her previous travels. Jenna loves the city of Kyoto as he can be very immerse in the cities period aesthetics while in traditional wear for it’s aesthetics and culture. Although she finds Kabuki Theater fascinating, she finds it hard to approach. Many plays refer to folk stories or historical references, and she wishes for a way to understand these stories so her Kabuki experience can be more meaningful.
